Should I choose 304 or 316 stainless steel for exhaust in coastal states?

The two alloys differ by one deliberate addition. T304 is an 18-8 austenitic grade carrying roughly 18% chromium and 8% nickel with no molybdenum, giving it a Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) of about 19. T316 and T316L hold roughly 16% chromium, 10% nickel, and 2–3% molybdenum; that molybdenum addition lifts PREN to approximately 24–27, which is roughly double the chloride pitting resistance of T304 on the same comparative scale.

That gap is exactly what coastal service tests. In salt-laden air, road splash, and winter de-icing exposure, chloride ions penetrate the chromium-oxide passive layer at weak points and initiate pitting — small pits that deepen over time, with welds, crevices, and heat-affected zones as the most common initiation sites. The reference figures are striking: at a chloride concentration of 300 ppm, T304 has a critical pitting temperature of about 40°C (104°F), a threshold that a hot exhaust surface and radiant engine-bay heat will readily exceed, while molybdenum-bearing T316 resists pitting well above that point. Exhaust tubing is also thermally cycled continuously, which works the passive layer and accelerates localized attack. In practice, T304 in coastal service commonly shows surface rust staining and localized pitting within a few years, whereas T316L holds up for far longer. Where the exhaust is welded — headers, flanges, hanger brackets — Fupower specifies low-carbon "L" grades (0.03% carbon maximum) to prevent chromium carbide precipitation during welding, which preserves corrosion resistance in the heat-affected zone instead of leaving the welded joints as the weakest points on the system.

Fupower states the trade-offs honestly rather than upselling grade. T316L costs more than T304, because molybdenum and the higher nickel content both carry a material premium — for an inland vehicle with no salt exposure, T304 delivers essentially the same service life at a lower unit cost, and it remains the correct default for performance exhaust. PREN is also a ranking index for comparing alloys, not a service-life guarantee: distance from the ocean, road-salt use, wash frequency, surface finish, and deposit accumulation all shift real-world outcomes, and T316L is not corrosion-proof — crevices and trapped road debris remain initiation points on any austenitic grade. Consistent freshwater rinsing of the exterior surfaces extends the life of either material, and neither grade affects flow, fitment, or power output.
