Fupower manufactures side-by-side exhaust systems with tunable sound output, and the safe answer is a design answer rather than a removal answer: a UTV exhaust should be made louder by fitting an engineered aftermarket muffler that was intentionally developed to be louder, not by removing the baffle, gutting the packing, or deleting the spark arrestor from the factory unit. On public desert land, loudness is a regulated quantity, not a preference. Off-highway vehicles operating on US public lands are required to stay within 96 dBA when measured by the SAE J1287 20-inch stationary sound test — the standard adopted in California, Colorado, and other states — while some states are stricter, such as Michigan's 94 dBA limit. A USFS-approved spark arrestor must also be present, and the USFS spark arrestor guide specifically notes that glass-pack designs without baffles do not qualify. Because dry desert brush and grass are exactly the conditions that rule exists for, a system that makes more noise by deleting its spark arrestor does not qualify as safe regardless of what it sounds like.
Engineered systems generate more sound through physics that Fupower controls at the design stage rather than through arbitrary restriction removal. The variables are muffler chamber volume and internal geometry, perforated core diameter, packing density and material, tailpipe diameter and length, and resonator tuning along the path — combinations that raise and shape the exhaust note while still meeting a target sound ceiling. Fupower applies this as sound tuning on T304 mandrel-bent systems, including modular spark arrestor tips and removable inserts so a machine can run one sound level on a closed course and a compliant level on public land. Two mechanical consequences have to be handled at the same time. First, changing any exhaust alters system backpressure, and EFI-equipped side-by-sides typically require a tune or fuel controller afterward to avoid a lean condition — running lean costs low-end torque and, in desert ambient heat with sustained load, raises exhaust gas temperatures into the range that risks detonation. Second, where a machine is fitted with emissions components, those stay fitted; louder exhaust and emissions compliance are separate requirements, not a trade-off.
Fupower states the limits plainly, because the failure mode here is loss of access rather than loss of points. Exceeding the applicable limit is not a tuning choice — in several jurisdictions it is illegal to modify an exhaust so that it exceeds the limit, and retailers may not lawfully sell a non-compliant muffler. The practical cost is shared: excessive sound is the single most common driver of trail and riding-area closures, which is why the industry position is that louder does not mean faster — power comes from flow and calibration, not volume. There is also a maintenance trap: exhaust packing breaks down over time and the machine gets progressively louder on its own, so any system has to be re-tested and repacked periodically, which restores both the sound character and the compliance margin. Finally, the law and the body are different limits. Prolonged exposure above 85 dB can cause gradual hearing loss, and desert riding adds wind noise and sustained engine load on top of exhaust output, so hearing protection is worth using even on a compliant machine.
