Polyester, Nomex or stainless wire — how is the reinforcement layer chosen?
The reinforcement layer is what stops the hose deforming under pressure, and it is chosen by application rather than by preference. A polyester fabric ply is the standard choice and covers most turbo boost and coolant duties. Nomex is a heat-resistant aramid fabric, used where the hose runs close to a turbocharger or a manifold and the reinforcement itself would otherwise be the first thing to degrade.
Stainless steel wire reinforcement is used when the hose must also resist collapsing under vacuum, or hold its shape on a long unsupported run. Braided stainless on the outside is a separate matter — that is abrasion protection, not reinforcement.
